A Special Summer for Special Needs Kids

The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center is known for its outstanding yearly programming. As they transition into summer, the excitement continues for kids of all ages, including those who require extra support.

Summer Camp Sol Taplin’s Koach and Ometz programs are inclusive camps for children with special needs ages 5-15 and 16 and up, respectively. These programs begin Monday, June 16, and run through Friday, August 8, with 4, 6, and 8-week options.

The Koach Summer Camp Program provides an opportunity for children with special needs to be integrated into the MAR-JCC’s day camp by allowing them to participate in the same summer fun activities, including soccer, aquatics, tennis, gymnastics, art, music and more.

Additionally, campers attend weekly field trips to popular South Florida attractions such as water and amusement parks, bowling, go-carting, ice-skating and laser quest. Each child is paired with an experienced “shadow,” who encourages full participation and fun, in a safe and comfortable environment.

For older campers, the Ometz Summer Camp Program provides an opportunity to learn and strengthen activities of daily living and teaches valuable pre-vocational skills that will later be practiced in retail establishments such as Publix, Broward Humane Society and Old Navy. Summer enrichment programs are implemented into daily schedules such as swimming, yoga, music, fitness, karate, art and more.Weekly field trips lend entertainment to this highly regarded program with trips to parks, museums, theaters and gaming emporiums.

“I believe the strength of our program lies with the variety of amazing programming, matched with our exceptionally talented shadows who support the campers and ensure they have a summer experience just the same as their peers,” explains Nili Davis, Director of the MAR-JCC’s Or Gadol Special Needs Department. “We carefully select and match each camper and shadow, as well as place children in age appropriate groups in an effort to create close bonds and the most enjoyable summer,” Nili adds.
